Grandpa Fenn’s story
The Honeycomb Floor
Pia held a piece of honeycomb up to the light. Every little room had six sides. All of them matched.
“Why not circles?” she asked.
Her grandpa drew some circles on a napkin. There were gaps between them. “Circles leave holes,” he said. “Squares and triangles fit together, but hexagons hold the most honey for the least wax.”
“How do the bees know?”
“Maybe they do not. Maybe the wax just settles into the shape that works best.”
Pia counted the sides again. Six. Six. Six. She decided it was the best floor plan she had ever seen.
