Grandpa Fenn’s story
The Pot in Layer Three
Dr. Mari knelt at the edge of the trench. The morning was already warm.
She did not dig. She brushed. One stroke, then another. Dust rose and settled.
Something curved came out of the dirt. Then a line. Then a pattern.
Zigzags. Red ones, all around the rim.
She sat back on her heels. Somebody made this. Somebody pressed those lines into wet clay and set it in the sun. Somebody carried water in it.
That somebody was not a king. It was an ordinary person on an ordinary day. And Dr. Mari was the first person to see their work in a very long time.
