Grandpa Fenn’s story

Why Ice Floats

Ray dropped an ice cube in his glass of water. It did not sink. It bobbed at the top.

“Why does it float?” he asked.

“Most things get smaller and heavier when they freeze,” said Mrs. Cole. “Water does the opposite. When it freezes, the tiny pieces of water line up in a pattern with lots of space between them. So ice takes up more room than the same water did.”

“So it is lighter?”

“For its size, yes. That is why it floats. It is also why a lake freezes from the top down, and the fish can live in the water underneath.”
