Grandpa Fenn’s story

A Rock With Stripes

Nina picked up a rock by the creek. It had stripes of red and tan and gray.

“How did it get stripes?” she asked her teacher.

“Long ago, this was mud at the bottom of a lake. The mud settled in layers, and each layer was a little different. Over millions of years, the weight of all those layers squeezed the mud into stone.”

“So every stripe is a different time?”

“Yes. The bottom stripe is the oldest.”

Nina turned the rock over in her hand. She was holding a stack of very old days.
