Sound waves

Last note

Nothing yet

Ring a bottle. Watch the line wiggle.

Why tapping works this way

Tap the glass and it shakes. The water shakes with it. More water is more weight. A heavier thing shakes slower. Slower shaking is a lower note. So more water, lower note.

Why blowing flips it

Blow across the top and the air inside shakes. More water leaves less air. A small pocket of air shakes faster. Faster shaking is a higher note. So more water, higher note. Try both on the same bottle. Your scale will run backward.

What a wave is

Every sound is shaking air. A high note makes a tight, busy wave. A low note makes a slow, wide wave. Poppy says the wave is the sound you can see.
