Grandpa Fenn's Workshop

The Sound Maker

Something has been humming in the back of the workshop. Grandpa says it is a box with three strings. Poppy wants to know how a string makes a sound.

Grandpa taps the box and smiles. Three strings, one wiggle, and a whole song waiting inside.

Why it works

A sound is a wiggle. When a string is plucked it wiggles back and forth very fast. The wiggle pushes the air and the air carries it to your ear.

A short string wiggles fast. A fast wiggle makes a high sound. A long string wiggles slowly. A slow wiggle makes a low sound.

A thin string wiggles faster than a thick one. That is why the little strings on a guitar sing high and the big ones rumble low.

Grandpa. Put your finger on the string. The sound stops. Wiggle stops, sound stops.
