Grandpa Fenn's Workshop

The Ramp Lab

Grandpa needs the crate in the loft. He will not lift it. He will roll it. Toby wants to know why a long way is the easy way.

Push it up

The crate weighs 80. The loft is the same height every time. Pick a ramp. Then slide to push the crate to the top.

Grandpa taps the plank. A long road makes a light load. That is the whole secret.

Why it works

A ramp is a slope that lets you lift a heavy thing in small steps. You do not lift it all at once.

The loft is the same height whether you go steep or gentle. But the gentle ramp is much longer. The push is spread over more distance, so each bit of the push is smaller.

Look at the numbers. The short steep ramp needs a big push. The long gentle ramp needs a small push. But you push the crate a lot farther.

Grandpa. The loft does not care how you get there. The work is the same. A ramp just spreads it out.

Grandpa's notebook

A ramp lets you lift in small steps.

A longer ramp means a lighter push.

A longer ramp also means a longer trip. The trade is always fair.

Big word for the day. Incline. A slope that goes up.
