Grandpa Fenn's Workshop

The Magnet Maze

Something on the bench keeps pulling at Grandpa's tools. He found the reason. A magnet hides under the board and a steel ball rolls through a maze.

Pull it home

Move your pointer over the board. Your magnet is hidden below it. Pull the steel ball through the maze to the star.

Grandpa slides the board out and the ball stays right where you left it. A pull you cannot see did all the work.

Why it works

A magnet pulls on iron and steel. It does not touch the ball. The pull reaches across a gap, through wood and through a board.

The pull is strongest close to the magnet and fades with distance. A big magnet reaches farther than a small one.

Not everything answers. Wood, plastic and glass ignore a magnet. Try the wooden bead and see for yourself.

Grandpa. Move slowly. If you pull the ball into a wall, it stops. You have to lead it around the corner.

Grandpa's notebook

A magnet pulls on iron and steel without touching.

The pull is strongest up close.

Wood and plastic do not feel it.

Big word for the day. Magnetic. Something a magnet can pull.

More machines are waiting on the bench.
