Grandpa Fenn's Workshop
A box of wooden teeth arrived at the workshop. Grandpa fits them into wheels and they turn each other. Poppy wants to know why the little one spins so much faster.

Turn the crank. Pick the other gear. Watch how fast and which way it turns. Then add a middle gear.
Grandpa wipes his hands on his apron. Teeth that never slip, and a turn handed from wheel to wheel.
Gears are wheels with teeth. The teeth lock together. When one gear turns, the next must turn too, but in the opposite direction.
Count the teeth. A gear with half as many teeth turns twice for every turn of the big one. A small gear spins fast. A big gear turns slowly, but with more twisting strength.
A middle gear does not change the speed. It only flips the direction back. That is why it is called an idler.
Poppy counts the teethGears are wheels with teeth that lock.
Meshed gears turn opposite ways.
A small gear spins faster. A big gear turns slower.
Big word for the day. Ratio. How many turns one gear makes for another.
More machines are waiting on the bench.
